As my lovely English soul sister dutifully reminded me, today is Guy Fawkes Day, aka the guy who attempted to assassinate King James I. You may recognize his likeness in mask form from V for Vendetta, which subsequently became popular for use in protests.
For those of you unfamiliar with the actual history of Guy Fawkes, he was a Catholic in 1604 England, and if you'll recall from 9th grade history, that pretty much meant you were fucked. So he met this dude, Thomas Wintour, who got him involved with a group of Catholic anarchists. He was sent in to kill the king in what is now known as the Gunpowder Plot, but the king was tipped off and, therefore avoided, you know, being killed. There's your history in a nutshell. If you're interested in more, research it yourself. I'm not your fucking teacher.
Given our current political climate, Guy Fawkes, both the man and the mask, is enjoying his day in the sun. His mask has become unanimous with protests and anti-capitalism. Also you should check out V for Vendetta if you haven't seen it, because it's awesome and terrifying. Anyway, in honor of Guy Fawkes day, I've compiled a list of songs by bands that my 15-year-old anarchist self was cool enough to enjoy. If only my 27-year-old self was that cool.
"Baby, I'm an Anarchist" by Against Me!
Baby, what's that confused look in your eyes?
What I'm trying to say is that I burn down buildings,
While you sit on a shelf inside of them.
You call the cops on the looters and pie-throwers
They call it class war, I call them coconspirators.
